burlesque

About a year or so after I started doing Pole Dancing classes, I sparked a bit of an interest in Burlesque. Though I still don't think I could ever go up on stage and do a little skit with the strip tease, I often find myself daydreaming about it.

Last night I went with a friend to the Victorian heat of the Miss Burlesque Australia 2011 competition. Though we found at least half the acts a bit 'meh' and repetitive, we enjoyed the night. There were only a few stand-out performances (who were the ones who ended up winning). Some of the girls did a very small skit and felt a bit rushed to undress and then they just ran off the stage. That seemed a bit pointless. I loved the way some of the girls put so much thought into a story to tell us, music choices, costumes, everything. Sadly, my favourite of the night did not win, but she did come second, which was an amazing effort.

Two things the night did confirm for me though, was my keen interest in taking up tassel twirling classes and fan dancing lessons. I think fan dancing is beautiful. Luckily, House of Burlesque offer classes which I will participate in next term. Tassel twirling classes seem to be a bit more rare so I hope to take that opportunity up soon. Or perhaps I'll make some pasties of my very own and just teach myself. ;-)

As well as sparking up an interest in the broad world of Burlesque, I'm also in love with the whole Pin-Up Girl generation. I adore the old vintage cards and collectors items with the pin-up photographs on them. There's just something so fun about them. This era seems to be popping up a lot lately, and various Burlesque studios hold workshops on it. I am going to make sure I do it one day as it looks like a lot of fun!
